Pillsbury United Communities Oak Park Youth and Family Center located in North Minneapolis is privileged to be a host site for the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools program for the fifth year this summer. The Children's Defense Fund Freedom Schools program provides summer enrichment that helps children fall in love with reading, increases their self-esteem, and generates more positive attitudes toward learning. Children are taught using a model curriculum that supports children and families around five essential components: high quality academic enrichment; parent and family involvement; civic engagement and social action; intergenerational leadership development; and nutrition, health and mental health. You may be familiar with the program, but to start off every day in Freedom School, our scholars (Students in grades K-8th) participate in an activity called Harambee where they sing and dance to inspirational songs to energize them and motivate them for their day.  As part of this activity, the kids are also read aloud to by positive and important role models in the community. We would love to have community figures, like you take part in this fun and motivating activity as well.  The dates and time range we have available for you to come and visit us are >Monday through Friday<, June 15 – August 1, 2015 from 8:15 am to 9:00 am. For more information on supporting this program: Freedom School Contact
